DRU endorses latest government Environment Improvement Plan

DRU, based in the Netherlands, is a leading European fireplace manufacturer that designs, produces and distributes gas fires, woodburning fires and stoves, electric fires and bioethanol fires.
The company happily endorses the 2023 Environment Improvement Plan. This is the latest review of the government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, which sets out a list of targets for issues such as clean air, thriving plants and wildlife, access to clean water, reduction of pesticides and enhanced biosecurity.

Along with leading woodburning industry body organisations and other major UK fireplace companies, DRU, through its woodburning appliance brands Dik Geurts and Spartherm is totally committed to meeting all the rigorous air quality and efficiency standards as set out in the plan.

All Dik Geurts and Spartherm fires and stoves are Ecodesign 2022 approved, complying with major European emissions and energy efficiency standards. In addition, many of the best-selling models in the UK are DEFRA approved for use in smoke free zones and are also adopting the special UK clearSkies certification.
As part of the Environment Improvement Plan, the government has no intention of banning the use of wood burning stoves for domestic heating. Instead, it will:

  • Tighten the limits that new stoves in smoke control areas must meet, reducing their limit of 5g of smoke per hour to a maximum of 3g.
  • Extend these limits to appliances used outside, such as garden stoves.
  • Encourage the use of modern, efficient wood burning appliances, preferably with external air combustion and room-sealed options.

Commenting on the latest developments, DRU UK general manager Niall Deiraniya said:

“We welcome the government’s new Environment Improvement Plan. This sets out a clear framework for our industry, our dealers and our customers to follow by facilitating responsible wood burning for the benefit of our natural environment and for the health and well-being of all our citizens and future generations.”
