Converting a gas fire to electric; what are the options?

Gas prices have risen and people doubt the future of gas. For these reasons, heating the house by means of a gas fire has become less and less popular. We are therefore regularly asked whether it is possible to convert a gas fire to an electric fire.

In this blog, we will answer, among other things, whether it is possible to convert a gas fire to an electric fire. We are going to talk about:

Can you convert a gas fire to an electric fire?

Nowadays, people are increasingly cutting off the home from natural gas for various reasons. For example, gas is currently an expensive fuel and there are doubts about the environmental friendliness of gas fires . We are therefore often asked whether it is possible to convert a gas fire to an electric fire.

Unfortunately, the answer to that question is not easy. First of all, the gas fire is connected to a gas network. It is easy to disconnect from this network, but converting the burner of a gas fire to electric is not yet a possibility. In addition, most electric fires are only suitable as built-in fires and not all existing gas fires are built-in. Do you want to switch from gas to electric now? Then replacing the gas fire with an electric one is currently the only way.

So, in short, the answer to the question of whether a gas fire is suitable for conversion to electric is currently no. However, we do hope that this will change in the future.

Installing the fire in an existing surround

Converting a gas fire to electric is not possible. However, it is possible to use the gas fire's existing chimney to build in the electric fire. With a few simple adjustments, your existing surround is suitable for the electric fire.

Fitting an electric fire in a new situation

An electric fire emits nothing, so when you buy an electric fire you do not need to take into account (the possibility of installing) a flue. Although an electric fire built into an existing chimney looks very chic, it is also possible to place the fire in a new situation. For example, build it in as a room divider between the kitchen and dining room and enjoy the atmosphere and warmth of the electric fire in both rooms.

The differences between a wood, gas and electric fire

Are you faced with the choice of which fire suits you best? If so, it is important to know the differences between the various fires. Here is a brief overview of the main differences between gas, wood and electric fires.

Efficiency and power

The power output of the different fires depends on the size of the fire. The efficiency of the electric fire is the highest. This is because no heat is lost through the chimney as is the case with wood fires. The gas fire achieves higher efficiency than the wood fire. Making sure you fire the wood fire responsibly will easily increase its efficiency. Good to know; not every electric fire is suitable to serve as space heating, but DRU electric fires are!

Environmentally friendly fire

The most environmentally friendly option? That's the electric fire. This fire emits nothing and therefore does not burden the environment. The wood fire is also relatively environmentally friendly when fired correctly. The gas fire is the least environmentally friendly of the three, but if you take measures to use less gas, you will reduce its emissions.

Easy stoking

Ever made and kept a fire yourself? Quite a lot of time goes into that. Although for many people it brings atmosphere and experience, the wood fire is by far the most difficult and time-consuming to light. The gas fire and electric fire, on the other hand, go on at the push of a button. This also makes it easier to regulate the intensity of the fire.

The placement options

The placement options for fires vary quite a bit depending on the situation. For convenience, we will discuss the placement options for a new situation and for an existing situation.

New situation
In a new situation, there are many options, but if you want a gas or wood fire, you need to take into account a flue. It varies per situation whether it is possible to install one and you are also not free to choose where the fire will be placed. The electric fire, on the other hand, is not dependent on a flue. In a new situation, you can therefore place this fire anywhere in your home.

Existing situation
In an existing situation - with a flue - it is fairly easy to install a new gas or wood fire. Keep in mind that not every flue is the same. Find out if yours fits the fire you have in mind. Installing an electric fire in an existing situation is certainly possible, but slightly more complex. This is because the electric fire has to be built in. This means that it is inevitable to make adjustments to the existing situation before it is suitable for the electric fire.

Cost of stoking and purchase

Generally speaking, the wood fire is the cheapest to buy, but this does not differ much from buying a gas or electric fire. Looking at consumption, the electric fire is by far the cheapest to fire. Currently, gas is the most expensive fuel of the three. However, there are also costs involved in installing the fire and converting the situation. Still want to get rid of gas? Meet the propane fire

Are you sure you want to get rid of natural gas, but is replacing your gas fire with an electric one not the solution for you? Then we would like to tell you about converting a gas fire to propane. With this conversion, you will (probably) avoid a major renovation, save on heating costs and continue to enjoy all the benefits of the gas fire!

Converting the gas fire to a propane fire

If you do want to get rid of the fire burning natural gas, but still enjoy the atmosphere and warmth of gas fires, propane gas is probably the solution for you! But what is the difference between natural gas and propane?

Not every gas is the same. In use, you will not notice that you are burning different gas, but in terms of connection, these types of gas do differ. The gas fire is supplied with gas because you are connected to the natural gas network, while propane comes from a bottle. If you want to convert your traditional gas fire to a propane gas fire, the fire must be suitable for a conversion. Almost all DRU gas fires are suitable for such a conversion and this conversion is very easy to realise.
